Your backyard is more than just a place to watch grass grow. A backyard can be so much more, like a haven for birds, a place to grow vegetables, or a calming paradise, complete with a gorgeous water feature to pull the whole space together. Based on your reaction to our Home and Garden Show 2018 water feature, we can safely say there’s a lot of love out there for the soft bubbling plash of fountains, streams and pools.
However, water features give many homeowners pause. They’re often considered overly expensive, and high maintenance, leading many potential DIYers and yard lovers to avoid water features in their landscapes. But, when done right, water features are no more intensive than a garden, and can add a whole new dimension to your yard.
Low Maintenance Water Feature Options
Some people love yard maintenance – those are the people you see out every weekend, mowing, fertilizing and doing any number of the one hundred and one chores needed to keep their yard looking prize-worthy. On the other side of the fence are the people we typically work with – those with other hobbies that prefer to outsource their yard work so they can enjoy a beautiful yard without sinking time that they don’t have.
For the latter, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a water feature, too. Both pond-less water features and bubbling water fountains offer low-maintenance options which add the benefits of a nice water feature without the maintenance that comes with standing water.
Both features are similar, with the water falling and disappearing into the base where a pump sits to get it back to the top where it can tumble down once again. Once installed, these features require little maintenance, but offer the peaceful sounds and relaxed look of tumbling water.
DIY Water Features
For those who love to tinker around in their backyard, a small pond can be a great addition. Ponds require more maintenance to keep them clean and free of mosquito larvae that can make your backyard a haven for the most annoying bugs alive. However, if you’re willing to commit to consistent maintenance, or hire someone for the job, a small pond is a great option.
There are two options you can take are an:
- Above ground pond – An easier installation option, and can be made to fit your own, unique style. For example, lovers of vintage-chic decor can use an old galvanized steel tub to create their water feature.
- In ground pond – Initially more work to install, but looks more natural, which also fits your style.
Adding in a waterfall to either of these water features will add a bit more ‘water music’ to your backyard, creating a very oasis-like feel.
Looking to bring your water feature to the next level? Add in some plants, and fish! Properly maintained, you can create a thriving ecosystem in your backyard with aquatic plants and fish. Most greenhouses around Lethbridge offer some really beautiful water plants. Add a flash of gold with some koi, which, lucky for all of us are easy to keep alive.
Beware, however, as water gardens need routine maintenance throughout the summer, will need to be winterized come fall, and need some help to get going again come spring.
